Day 1

Welcome to Japan! Upon arrival at Kansai Airport you will be met by your guide and driver and proceed to transfer to Tokushima. This drive takes around 2 hours through small towns and along the sea-side. Upon arrival in Tokushima, check into your hotel and spend free time at leisure enjoying local sights until this evening when you will join a welcome dinner with the group to kick off the tour.

Day 2

Tokushima

Following breakfast at your hotel, spend the morning at your own leisure sightseeing and enjoying local sights before meeting your guide to head to the Bizan Ropeway. The ropeway is a symbol of Tokushima City that overlooks the whole area, and on clear days you can see out to Awaji Island to the north and the Kii Peninsula to the east. Following lunch with the group, you will have time to further explore Bizan Park before reconvening at the base of the ropeway - on the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Kaikan (a museum where visitors can learn about Awa Odori, a traditional dance specific to the area, watch displays of the dance and sample local products). Here, together with  your guide the group will spend the evening observing locals performing Awa Odori Dance. Following the performance, make  your way back to your hotel and relax for the evening.

Day 3

Following breakfast at your hotel, meet with the guide and set out to visit Naruto Whirlpool, created when the water tides of the Pacific and Seto Inland sea mix. The magnificent whirlpools in the Naruto Straits can be enjoyed from several vantages, none more spectacular than the Uzu No Michi Walkway - offering a variety of views through glass viewing panels from a height of 45m above the sea. From here, enjoy lunch witht he group before moving onward to visit the Otsuka Museum of Art History, Japan’s largest exhibition space with more than 1,000 paintings reproduced on ceramic boards. After an afternoon at the museum, transfer to Takamatsu for your overnight stay. On the way to Takamatsu, your driver will take a short detour to observe the sunset views from Yashima Island.

Takamatsu - Risturin Garden - Naoshima

Day 4

Today, please pack an overnight bag to take with  you on the overnight trip to Naoshima, and leave your main luggage with hotel concierge for collection upon return to Takamatsu tomorrow afternoon. This morning, set off on an early start today with a visit to Ritsurin Garden, one of the very popular gardens located inside Takamatsu City. Designed in the 17th century, the garden contains 6 ponds, 1400 pine trees, many carps, beautiful bridges, and traditional houses. Here, you will have the unique opportunity to have a traditional breakfast of rice porridge (asa-gayu, meaning "morning porridge") at Hanazono-tei, one of the tea houses in the garden, while enjoying a garden view and a tea ceremony experience. Enjoy lunch with the group before departing Takamatsu for Naoshima, which will be reached via transfer from the port by ferry. Upon arrival in Naoshima, check into your hotel and enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing at your own leisure. Naoshima is the most famous of all the art islands of this region and you will enjoy spending the day taking in its artistic landscape, including museums, exhibitions and installations dotted around the Island. Return to the hotel for dinner and spend the evening relaxing and refuelling for another day of sightseeing tomorrow.

Day 5

Following breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a morning of relaxing sightseeing at your own pace. As an island is known for its many contemporary site-specific installations by James Turrell, Walter De Maria, and paintings by Claude Monet, you will not find it difficult to fill the time with interesting sightseeing. Reconvene with your guide and the group for lunch prior to departing via ferry back to Takamatsu. Upon arrival in Takamatsu, enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel to spend your evening at leisure.

Day 6

Following breakfast at your hotel, travel to Udatsu Town, a small yet beautiful town with people who have preserved their tradition through ages by continuing to make Japanese Umbrellas, Bamboo dolls, and other handicrafts. Udatsu Town, which used to be one busy trade center in the Edo Period, still preserves the old houses which were used by the highly ranked businessman of Shikoku. You will have free time at leisure to explore the area in the morning. For group members who wish to do so, an optional handcraft experience may be purchased on the morning. Following lunch together with your guide and group, spend the afternoon experiencing a houseboat ride through the spectacular Oboke Gorge - a deep ravine where the Yoshino River flows, surrounded by spectacular scenery. This area is not readily accessible by public transport and, traditionally, suspension bridges made of mountain vines were one of the only ways to easily move people and goods across the river of the Iya Valley. Following your trip down the Gorge, you will also pay a visit to one of Iya’s famous Vine Bridges, and nearby waterfall, before proceeding onward to enjoy dinner and hot springs at your accommodation for the night

Day 7

Following breakfast at  your hotel, set out with your guide and driver to visit Scarecrow Village - started by one woman, supported by the locals, and now making more than 1200 dolls in all places around the village, where the total population is around 35 people. Listen to the history of how all it started and see different types of dolls placed in all major parts of the town. Travelling onward, and on the way to Kochi, your driver will stop off at Chikurinji Temple, the 31st temple in the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage Route. You will have free time to wander around and visit the temple before enjoying lunch. Upon arrival in Kochi, check into your hotel and enjoy free time at leisure before reconvening with he guide and your group to visit the bustling Hirome Market - a local food market that feels more like a festival, and where you can raise a glass in cheers with the locals! Here, you'll find an abundance of great local specialties to international cuisine. It is said that you end up making at least one new friend at Hirome Market. Return to your hotel and spend the evening at leisure.

Kochi - Nakatsu Gorge - Ino Town - Kochi

Day 8

Kochi - Nakatsu Gorge - Ino Town - Kochi

Following breakfast at your hotel, meet with your guide and travel with the group on a small curvy mountainous road to reach Nakatsu Gorge; which, with its super-beautiful water flow that comes from nearby mountains, has been rated as Japan’s most crystal clear river for many years. Enjoy taking in the sights here and spending time discovering Nakatsu before stopping for lunch with the group. In the afternoon, continue on to Ino town, where you will have the chance to enjoy a Traditional Japanese Paper Making experience. This stop will also include a visit to Ino Museum for a chance to learn more about how Japanese Paper is made. Your guide and driver will transfer you back to Kochi where you will have free time to explore at leisure (for those who are interested: A short visit to Kochi Castle is a worthy experience to know about Japanese history and culture) before dinner in the evening.

Following breakfast at your hotel, meet with your guide and river to visit Kure Taisho Market in the morning, where you can observe the traditional fish market, lively with a lot of vendors and buyers. Travel further onwards to the Shimanto River to visit one of the Sinking Bridges in this river. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy lunch while riding on a Shimanto River Boat! Following lunch, you will head to Ashizuri Cape, detouring via Kongofuku-ji Temple; the 38th and southernmost temple of the Ohenro Pilgrimage. At Ashizuri Cape, check into your hotel and spend time at leisure enjoying the ocean view and local vegetation before re-joining the group for dinner in the evening.

Following breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide and driver and transfer to Uchiko Town, a small traditional town in this area well known for preserving old houses and small shops, giving people the opportunity to explore national heritage sites. Enjoy lunch with the group before continuing to travel toward Matsuyama City. On the way, your group will stop for a short Pottery Experience at Tobe Town before arriving in Matsuyama where you can enjoy free time to explore the area's famous Dogo Hot Spring at your leisure. Reconvene with the group for dinner in the early evening and spend the rest of your night relaxing at your own pace.

Following breakfast at your hotel, meet your driver and guide to travel to the Shimanami Kaido, where you will enjoy a morning cycling experience on the bridges overlooking the beautiful Seto Inland Sea and nearby hills. Enjoy lunch before returning to Matsuyama to enjoy an an afternoon of sightseeing around the city, including a visit to Matsuyama Castle, one of the city's most popular sightseeing spots. The ropeway to the Castle, and it's surrounds provides some great sightseeing! However, interested group members may also wish to purchase an entry ticket to the castle to look around inside. Enjoy dinner as a group in the early evening, then, those who wish to do so will have another chance to wind down and relax at Dogo Hot Spring again this evening.

Following breakfast at your hotel, transfer to Kansai Airport, accompanied by your guide, for your departure flight. The guide and driver will see all tour members off upon arrival at the airport, and the tour will end.
